Shuts down nerve : Local anesthetics and steroids decrease the rate of nerves firing. Decreased firing rate = decreased pain perception. Yes, steroids act to decrease inflammation. Steroid side effects include drug reactions, increase in blood sugar and fluid retention. Local anesthetics have very few side effects.

Diagnostic and: Often therapeutic. Nerve block by itself is not effective long term. Usually another procedure follows this diagnostic injection which is either radiofrequency ablation or injection with steroid to decrease inflammation. Side effects, infection, bleeding, bowel puncture. Have it done under ultrasound.
