Plane has no effect: Unless the hernia is large, it is out and not reducable and not painful he will be ok. But it would be wise to see a doctor. If it is large, it makes sence to have it surgically treeated with a planned surgery compared to an urgent surgery. The main recommendation - no heavy lifting.

Yes: A hernia becomes a problem when it becomes incarcerated, in other words, something becomes trapped in the hernia and cannot squeeze out of the hernia sac. This is usually self evident with pain, vomiting and abdominal pain. As long as the contents of the hernia can be pushed back, i.e. Reduced, then it should not be a problem. Nevertheless, it would behoove him to see a general surgeon to fix.
