Your own dentist: Should be able to give you all the information, help, guidance and treatment you require in order to resolve your discomfort. It will probably take some continued effort and diligence on your part as well. It's probably a matter of continued good oral hygiene (tooth brushing and flossing). If that doesn't work see a periodontist for a consultation.

Treat gums 1st: If x-ray was taken and did not show any tooth problem, and if you have not had your teeth cleaned for a long time, your gums may be the problem. Usually a deep cleaning and often use of antibiotics placed under the gum (arestin) you may heal in about 5 to 7 days.

Xray: Have your dentist take an xray, do thermal tests, pressure tests and pulp tests, and also, if you're overdue for cleaning or periodontal maintenance, get that addressed asap... You may have multiple issues going on.

Gingivitis - abscess: The gum irritation that you mention could be anything as simple as gingivitis or as serious as an abscess. An x-ray would need to be taken to rule out infection that could require root canal therapy, periodontal therapy, or even extraction. If infection is ruled out, then the problem might resolve with thorough brushing and flossing. I also recommend a hydrogen peroxide containing mouth rinse.
