Lamisil (terbinafine): Lamisil (terbinafine) is an effective treatment, but you should see a doctor so that your liver function may be tested before the drug is administered and may require follow-up tests to avoid liver damage.

Topical meds: Creams and lotions. Some are available over the counter. But the diagnosis may be something else. So before running to your local drug store to buy a tube of athletes foot medicine, check with your doctor to be sure it isn't something else.

Tolnaftate: Athlete's foot is so well-known in the sports community that a trial of this over-the-counter remedy is worthwhile before a physician's office visit is considered. If it's scabies instead, it will be obvious that the antifungals are not working. If you don't have a good result after two weeks of topical treatment, get with your physician.
