Lighter, and shorter: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud is fda approved as a treatment for heavy periods. It has progestin hormone on it, that causes the lining of the uterus to become thinner over time. Most women experience a lighter period with the Mirena (levonorgestrel) in place.

Lighter over time: For the first 4-6 months, your menses will be a little more irregular and erratic. However, after 6 months, menses will be much lighter or even absent. Amenorrhea (no menses) is experienced by 30% of women with a Mirena (levonorgestrel) after 2 years.
