Depends: Was the TMJ MRI done with intravenous contrast (did she get an IV placed when she got the mri)? If the MRI was not done with IV contrast then it cannot be used to rule out TMJ arthritis. Tmj arthritis occurs in up to 70% of kids with jia/jra but a jaw that pops is not by itself a clinical sign of active arthritis--it is only a sign of loose jaw joints that are not related to arthritis.

Jaw popping is often: Related to a displaced jaw joint disk. Bite problems & jaw muscle issues can affect the proper coordinated position of the disk & the jaw condyle "pops" over the misplaced disk. Hopeful that jra has not affected the joint, seek consult w a dentist that is well trained in bite and muscle problems. Look for one who studied with the pankey institute or the peter dawson group. Splint might help!
