Great question!: Asthma control is achieved through recognizing the severity of asthma so the appropriate amount of medication (good inhaler technique) can be used. Also, avoiding asthma triggers (smoke, pollen, etc), following a written asthma action plan when symptoms occur to react early. Having lung function checked by spirometry and exhaled Nitric Oxide if available as well. Influenza vaccine each fall.

Medicine + clean air: People with cough-variant asthma or night-time asthma can use steroid inhalers (such as flovent) to reduce swelling, mucus, and "sensitivity" in the airways. Bronchodilators such as albuterol or xopenex (levalbuterol) enlarge the diameter of the airways to help air flow and mucus come out of the lungs. Singulair chewables are another preventive medicine. A hepa air filter and dustproof/pollenproof bedding helps.

Hepa filters: Purifying the air is benficial to asthmatics and allergy and people in general. I always recommend hepa filters. Honeywell makes several dpending on the room size. They are not too expensive but are certainly worth ir.

Very important contr: Asthma needs to be controlled and acute attacks to be prevented to cut down the hospitalisations and in severe cases it can be fatal if not properly treated
if not properly controled can cause unneccessary hospitalisations and can be life threatning.

What is good to help control asthma?

Reduce triggers: Triggers are things that set asthma off. If your asthma is set off by smoke, then avoid environments where you might be exposed. If you're allergic to pets, avoid those. If dust mites are a problem, mattress covers help. For best results, an allergist can help you find out exactly what your triggers are. Medicines that reduce inflammation and open the airways help control remaining symptoms.
