Complicates it: Having dm during pregnancy makes a woman high risk for a number of reasons. Bs is harder to control during pregnancy and the baby is at risk for a number of birth defects and/or large weight/size if the bs is uncontrolled during the pregnancy. Additionally women may developed rapidly worsening diabetic eye disease called retinopathy during pregnancy as well which has to be monitored.
