All of the above: All of the things you mentioned can happen. In addition, some drugs can block certain steps in the formation of proteins needed to build the body, and then abnormal proteins form and defects occur. There are sooooo many different ways drugs and chemicals can affect the growing body - we probably don't even know al of them yet.
