Unknown.: There is no definitive answer to what causes lichen planus. It is thought to be an auto immune disorder. There is some suspicion that cinnamon might be a cause.

Lichen Planus: This disorder is one of those things that have an unknown cause. One suggestion is that it may be an autoimmune disease with a nonspecific trigger. Treatment, for the most part is symptomatic and disappointing is its success. Sometimes it will resolve on its own after many months.

Oral Lichen Planus: Unfortunately we still don't know the cause although we suspect many triggers. See the following website for some possibilities: http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/oral-lichen-planus/ds00784/dsection=causes.

Unknown: It's really unknown why this happens. More research is needed to study lichen planus and hopefully find a cure.

Lichen planus: The exact cause of lichen planus is unknown. It is thought to be an allergic or immune reaction (nih report). May also be a reaction to medication. It may respond to treatment, or resolve itself.
