Lichen Planus: This disorder is one of those things that have an unknown cause. One suggestion is that it may be an autoimmune disease with a nonspecific trigger. Treatment, for the most part is symptomatic and disappointing is its success. Sometimes it will resolve on its own after many months.

Lichen planus: The exact cause of lichen planus is unknown. It is thought to be an allergic or immune reaction (nih report). May also be a reaction to medication. It may respond to treatment, or resolve itself.
