A member asked:

What do the experts think, should my chest x-ray show that i have smoked?

Suggestion: If you have emphysema or, worse case scenario, lung cancer, then smoking may be inferred as it is a common cause of these. If radiologists see these issues we may raise the question of a smoking history. However, there is no finding on chest x-ray that is definitive for a smoking history.

Dirty lungs?: Usually smoking appears on chest radiograph as prominent central markings which can also be seen in viral infection, reactive airway disease, and inhaling polutants.Interstitial markings or small lines in lungs more prominent.Sometimes COPD shows as overaeration to lungs which can be secondary to smoking.
