Knee: The Ortho dr will spend time learning (by taking your history) .about your specific problem, This will then be accompanied by a physical exam. You may be asked to undergo tests like xrays or MRIs or blood work . After the above is complete a diagnosis will be given along with a treatment plan . Note that if blood testing and or Mris are reccomended the results will not be immediately available .

History and Physical: Your surgeon will talk to you about your problem and examine your knee. He/she will decide if you need xrays or any other tests to decide on a diagnosis and give you options on what to do that may or may not include: 1) doing nothing, 2) doing physical therapy, 3) getting injections, and/or 4) having surgery. They should give you the risks and benefits of each treatment to help you decide.
