See below: This means loss of both gray and white matter, with smaller brain size, and may be a normal part of aging. Also, both diffuse and focal patterns of atrophy are seen in alzheimer's, front-temporal dementias, ms. Repetitive brain injuries, hypoxia, consequence of encephalitis in some cases. In summary, if atrophy goes faster than expected, is a sign of neurological problem.
