Spotting common: The hormones, Progesterone and estrogen decline because there is a not a pregnancy, and this leads to the production of the prostaglandin chemicals which drive the menstrual bleeding. These changes can be gradual and it is common to get spotting the day prior to bleeding and some women even spot a few days prior to a full flow of blood.
