R.I.C.E.: Rest, ice, compression, elevation. If that fails i would suggest seeing your pcp.

Severe ankle pain: The outer bone could be a contusion, stress fracture, or chip fracture. It sounds like you'll need imaging to determine if there is other pathology and i agree with previous posts, to elevate, use ice and more ice, compression wrapping with possible bracing in the area and antiinflammatory medication before seeing a doctor. Hope this helps.
