What do you recommend for rhabdomyolysis?

Urgent evaluation: Rhabdomyolysis means that there was some damage to muscle fibers causing them to break down. Myoglobin which is a protein present in muscle then leaks into the blood. The myoglobin enters the kidney and can cause rapid onset kidney failure. Depending on the degree of rhabdomyolysis, measured by the CPK level, you may need hospital admission and IV fluid hydration. Speak to your doctor right away.

IV Fluids: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially very serious condition that should be treated in hospital with IV fluids containing a high concentration of sodium bicarbonate with monitoring of the urine ph, as well as the serum chemistries and kidney function. Multiple complications can occur, but may be avoided with rapid and appropriate therapy.

Rest,IV fluids, bicar: Rest, generous hydration with sodium chloride, consider adding sodium bicarbonate to the IV fluids if moderate-severe. Dvt prophylaxsis during the down time. Monitoring of urine output and urine pH are recommended. Regular measurements of serum sodium, bun/creatinine and potassium are necessary.

No recommendations: Rhabdo should have a cause and the cause should be identified then treatment will be tailored to the cause. Close follow up is very improtant depending on how bad the rhabdo is. Hosptilization might be required sometimes.
