Sometimes early intervention with antivirals (tamiflu) interrupts the course of true influenza, but this is the exception, not the rule. Most viral disease must run its course. For the garden variety sore throat, lozenges, inspiration of moist mentholated steam vapor, rest, and plenty of fluids helps.
