Depends on symptoms: If you have a psychiatric condition that would be helped by antidepressants such as severe anxiety or depression, then you should seriously consider this treatment. Alternatively psychotherapy may help as well.

Medications for Mood: When large studies of patients are conducted in the treatment of depression (a medical diagnosis that has to be made by a doctor) the best outcomes are seen in the combination of medication and therapy. It is critical to work with a patient and caring provider who is there for the long run and fine tune medication choice and dosing as one size does not fit all. It has to be customized for you.

Prescribed: Yes, antidepressants are prescribed medications. That is the only way to get them legally. However, antidepressants are not the only possible treatment for depression. You can see your primary care physician and/or a psychiatrist for evaluation; if this doctor feels antidepressants might help you, they will be offered. Psychotherapy + antidepressants provides even better results.
