Since alcohol is a depressent and can cause coma, can it be used to put someone out for surgery? Or is it not strong enough?

A couple things: First, alcohol is actually a drug and has sedating properties. Not only that, if one drinks too much, it is actually possible to be poisoned and to stop breathing. Those could be considered depressant effects. Also, excessive alcohol use over time, may lead to someone having a depressed mood. Too much alcohol can adversely affect all organs in the body (except the kidneys). Good question.

That is very tough: But it may be that u need to help yourself. Al anon and those groups will show u how to not go down with a sinking ship while he seeks help. There are a few options that may help him. The opiod receptor blocker Naltrexone takes the satisfaction away. Topirimate seems to help reduce problem drinking, but he likely needs in patient detox, treatment for mood/stress issues, support group. Gd luc.

Alanon: First, the person has to recognize that they have a problem and commit themselves to solving it. Alcoholics anonymous has about the best rate of success with abstinence, and if you want to help them, contact alanon and they will give you advice.

Has 15 percent mortality rate treat co morbid factors as well.Its a life long illness.

Complex problem: Alcoholism is a chronic relapsing disease. Alcoholics must be very motivated to quit drinking. Help them avoid triggers for use (avoid bars and parties serving etoh). Help them find the right treatment. Self-help groups are helpful. Look up info on meds such as antabuse, (disulfiram) Naltrexone & campral. Find balance between giving up and enabling!
