A 38-year-old member asked:
what are alcohol's depressant effects?

A couple things: First, alcohol is actually a drug and has sedating properties. Not only that, if one drinks too much, it is actually possible to be poisoned and to stop breathing. Those could be considered depressant effects. Also, excessive alcohol use over time, may lead to someone having a depressed mood. Too much alcohol can adversely affect all organs in the body (except the kidneys). Good question.

All people are diff.: All people are different. Some of it depends on how badly one is habituated to alcohol. Avoid getting into that situation by stopping or at least controlling your intake so you don't have to worry about detoxifying.

That is very tough: But it may be that u need to help yourself. Al anon and those groups will show u how to not go down with a sinking ship while he seeks help. There are a few options that may help him. The opiod receptor blocker Naltrexone takes the satisfaction away. Topirimate seems to help reduce problem drinking, but he likely needs in patient detox, treatment for mood/stress issues, support group. Gd luc.
