A member asked:

How can taking an antacid help when someone who is dealing with heartburn?

It neutralises acid: The hearburn is caused by acid reflux, meaning the acid which is normally present in the stomach finds its way in the esophagus and thereby causing heartburn. So by taking antacid you neutralize the acid and that reduces the amount of acid in stomach and it is unable to come in the esophagus. You can achieve that also by acid suppression by meds like ranitidin or omeprazole.

Agree w Dr Khanna: Very simply, because the pain of heartburn, GERD is caused because acid splashes up from the stomach into the esophagus (or higher) where the tissues are not protected from acid. Decreasing the acid can improve the condition.
