In general, yes: However, there are 3 grades of sprained ankles and depending on the degree of injury, you will be more apt to walk on the joint. However, if you have a fracture or a severe sprain (grade iii), it may be more detrimental if you walk on it. If you haven't already, get your ankle examined and ask your doctor properly before returning to activity.

Yes, but: For sprained ankles, rice is usually the first step toward rehab. Resting is obviously important but probably the hardest to do, icing around the area, compression with comfortable ace-bandage, and elevation. Taking antiinflammatory medication can be helpful the first few weeks after to help decrease pain and swelling. Also, getting over counter ankle bracing may help for more moderate sprains.
