A member asked:

Isn't drinking cranberry juice to prevent urinary tract infection an old wives' tale?

No: Cranberry juice acidifys the urine which makes it harder for some bacteria to grow. There are also substances in cranberries thought to make it difficult for bacteria to get established.

Not a myth: Cranberries contain a chemical, proanthocyanidin, which interferes with the ability of bacteria, especially e.Coli (most common species of bacteria to cause urinary tract infections) from adhering to the bladder lining. Bacteria are thus flushed out urination and are unlikely to cause a uti. Excellent research article published in new england journal of medicine 3 or 4 years ago proving this.
