When does it....: ....Smell good? When otherwise well toddlers have diarrhea, look to diet as a possible cause. Often it's something as simple as too much juice...I recommend giving kids no juice as it's lousy nutrition and gets them in the habit of looking for something sweet when they're thirsty. Feed though diarrhea and make sure he's drinking. See your doctor if other symptoms develop.

Check diet, then...: Make sure the child's diet is not too heavy in simple sugars (like sucrose or fruit juices) and that the child is getting plenty of multigrain complex carbs. Also may want to try low or no lactose a few days to see if that helps. A week of probiotics may also be helpful. But if he is feeling ill, fever, blood in stool or not better with the dietary interventions after a week, need to see his doc!
