MDD > Bipolar: Most individuals who ultimately develop bipolar initially had depression. It is difficult to diagnose type ii bipolar, because other than depression, the abnormality is hypomania episodes, which are associated with improved functioning. On average, it takes 10 years for a person who has bipolar to accurately receive the diagnosis. This is particularly the case with bipolar type ii, like yourself.

Bipolar II disorder: Bipolar ii disorder is characterized by episodes of major depression (sadness, irritability, fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, suicidal ideas, hopelessness, worthlessness) alternating with episodes of hypomania (high energy, rapid speech, lack of sleep, derailed thinking) which do not qualify as mania, and usually respond to mood stabilizers rather than to antidepressants.
