A member asked:

Protected sex. status of the person unknown. if they had hiv would a sore throat that wasnt accompanied by a fever or rash likely be a symptom of hiv?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Possible: Everyone has different presentation of the prodrome (the initial phase of hiv), ranging from nothing to mild cold resembling symptoms to those resembling full blown flu or tonsillitis. Protected sex is better than unprotected but is not 100% guarantee against HIV acquisition. If the exposure is recent, the only way to be tested would be to check HIV viral load since antibody test may be negative.
