Obstruction: If you have hydronephrosis, it is importation to determine if there is a blockage or just a "slow" system. After Lasix (furosemide), kidneys that are not blocked will show greater excretion on renogram; blocked kidneys will have no response.

Furosemide (Lasix): Causes the kidneys to make more urine. During a radionuclide renogram, if the upper collecting system of one or both of the kidneys appears to not be draining properly, Furosemide can be administered in order to attempt to "flush out" the radionuclide from the upper collecting system into the bladder. If it works, the collecting system is dilated, but not obstructed. If not, it is blocked.
