Varies: Ativan is rapid but not long-lasting. As contrasted to ambien, no hangover, and certainly no sleep walking. Lunesta (eszopiclone) relatively safe but not as potent, yet problem here is bad taste in mouth after up and about. All of these items have risk of tolerance, with value dropping over time and need for larger dose.

Sleep hygiene: To aid sleep over time, sleep hygiene is better than meds. Go to bed & wake up @ same time daily. Use a comfortable bed with comfy pillows only for sleep/sex; no caffeine after 12 noon; no alcohol 3-4 hrs prior to sleep; avoid eating meals and vigorous exercising within 3h of bedtime (can have small snack if needed, & gentle yoga). Maintain a quiet, dark, cool room, with no computer, etc.
