A member asked:

How would i know if i tore a ligament in my ankle without an mri?

See below : Clinical exam by an orthopedic surgeon is often sufficient. Ultrasound is an alternative to MRI in selected cases. The nice bit about ultrasound is that it can image while stressing the joint. This is not the case with mri.
