Shoe gear: Could be your shoe choices, from your location (nyc) and your age, you probably wear uncomfortable shoes for long periods of time. Although your feet may not hurt at the time, you can impinge a nerve that runs to your big toe and damage other structures of your foot/ toe. Try wearing supportive shoes and give it time.

Neuroma or nerve: If its the big toe it's likely due to shoe pressure especially if a bunion is present. Numbness in other toes if only on one foot is likely due to a neuroma or tarsal tunnel syndrome. Any of these conditions are generally readily treatable.
