JIA!: Young children really do not have "rheumatoid arthritis." we now call it "juvenile idiopathic arthritis! we have many other drugs to treat this arthritis. Your child is hopefully under the care of a rheumatologist! is he taking an NSAID for pain? Is the CRP ( a measure of inflammation) still high. If so, other medications can be used. Both Humira and Enbrel (etanercept) are avaiable options, too. Good luck!

Add a TNF-inhibitor: Kids tolerate the combination of weekly Methotrexate and a tnf-inhibitor (enbrel, humira, remicade)so well, there is no reason to not start both medications. The goal in children should be no active arthritis. There is not the same risk of infections that adults have.Kids are growing and anything less than total remission of their disease can inhibit normal growth.Make sure Enbrel (etanercept) or Humira is added.
