See below: Nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation is a safe and effective technique when administered by trained personnel on carefully selected patients. It has both analgesia/anxiolysis effects (the gas works by elimination of pain and anxiety in a conscious patient). Nitrous oxide is absorbed rapidly, allowing for both rapid onset and recovery (about 2-3 minutes).

No it won't : Put you to sleep. It's more to relax you during the procedure. If you'd prefer, just let your dentist know that you prefer not to have it. Hope this helps.

Then don't use it: Most patients love getting laughing gas. However those patients who don't like losing control, feeling high or are claustrophobic are not good candidates for its use. It is not essential to use. Many of my patients do fine with local anesthesia alone. I was apprehensive the first time i had it used on me, but use it routinely now in addition to local anesthesia. You can ask for a "light" dose.
