At birth: But diabetes in the newborn is very uncommon. If you have concerns, check w/your pediatrician.

Right away: We do routinely check several glucose tests in newborns in the first 24 hours of life, in particular to evaluate for the effects of gestational diabetes on the baby which is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). If you are speaking of type one diabetes, or if you have a first degree relative with type one diabetes, child can be enrolled in trial net, which evaluates for the early antibodies of disease
