Any chronic process: Anything which causes repeat episodes or continuous episodes of inflammation of the liver over long time periods can produce cirrhosis. This is scarring of the liver, isolating segments of liver cells from the circulation and impairing their function, to the extent that the liver can no longer perform its duties. This includes infections, metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, and so on.
