I had a colonoscopy last week. they found erythematous mucosa in the sigmoid and several areas of raised inflammation in ileum. what could cause that?

Might: Not be anything or it could represent inflammatory bowel disease such as crohn's. They should have done biopsies so the path reports should provide more information allowing proper therapy to be initiated if necessary.
