Pretty accurate : A 2-dimentional transthoracic echocardiogram with doppler studies is fairly accurate in detecting most cardiac malformations suspected from an auscultated murmur. Accuracy would increase when interpreted by the examining cardiologist. Technical quality of the exam can interfere with accuracy. A transthoracic echo (tee) would provide more accurate information in certain conditions (e.g. Pfo).

High accuracy: For investigation of the possible causes of a heart murmur, a properly performed transthoracic echocardiogram will have high accuracy as long as the imaging windows are good. If the echocardiogram is normal and the quality of images obtained is good, no further investigation is required.
