Many ways: Interstitial cystitis is not a malignant condition and is not an infection. E do not know why people get interstitial cystitis or why it is so much more common in women. Unlike other disorders there is a problem with the bladder lining which appears to be more porous than normal. Also it responds to a mild diet avoiding acid urine producing urine foods and beverages e.g. Oj. Others do not.

Don't know the cause: I.C. Is difficult to diagnose and treat because we really don't understand what causes it. We see high correlation of the disorder with family history and endometriosis but are not really sure what the primary cause of it is. Docs have to have a high index of suspicion and be willing to look for it.
