My son just turned 4, he has been potty trained for 2 years. tonight, after going to sleep, he pooped his pants, not diarrhea. what would cause this?

Reply : Your son is in the age group where encopresis is common esp boys. They have chronic constipation due to many reasons mostly conscious with holding of stool. A point comes when their rectum cannot hold the stool anymore and some of the stool leaks in pants. Increase fluids, fiber like fruits and veggies in his diet and make a toilet routine for him.If problem continues then consult his doctor.

Stool holding: Classically in this age group, stool withholding is very common - even well after potty training. Encoporesis (the formal name) happens when young children hold their poo for many different reasons (eg, too busy playing, constipation, fear of pain from hard passage of stool, etc). When they relax (ie, going to bed), they often soil their paints. I would recommend talking to your pediatrician first.
