Fiber: The main reasons for constipation are not eating enough fiber and not drinking enough water. Eat foods high in fiber, like fruits, vegetables, bran, and whole-wheat items. Exercise will help prevent constipation. Limiting milk and high-fat foods can help as well. Drink more water than any other liquid, such as coffee and soda, which can dehydrate you and cause constipation.

Fiber and Water: Eat foods high in fiber, like fruits, vegetables, bran, and whole-wheat/whole-grain items. Dietary fiber powder, capsules, powder, and wafers can be used to supplement the fiber in your foods, but increase the amount of water you drink with those items. Drink lots of water. Exercise will help prevent constipation.
