How can a doctor tell if you have an ear infection or not?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Exam: The presence of puss filled fluid on the inside of an ear drum is visible confirmation of a middle ear infection.A patient may or may not have fever or localized pain. Their may be a history of a preceding upper respiratory infection.Outer canal infections caused by over hydration, fungi or bacteria are evident on exam but often have a normal looking ear drum.
