Usually genetic: In most young women (under age 40) causes of breast cancer are often due to cancer genes that are inherited from one's parents (hereditary syndromes). The most common and best understood genes are brca1 and brca2. There are others and likely several that have not yet been discovered.

Unknown: There are some increased breast cancer risks associated with obesity, hormone medication use, early age at first menstruation, late age at first childbirth, etc. Only about 15% of breast cancers occur because of genetic inheritance.
