Rare, but it exists: I have had one patient with deglution syncope.. He was a 30 year old man who fainted if he gulped ice cold coca cola rapidly. We reproduced this in the clinic -- he became asystololic and fainted. Other beverages had no effect, and he had a normal response to carotids massage. We implanted a pacemaker because of concern that it could progress and was potentially life-threatening.
