A member asked:

If my parents don't have cancer but my aunt died from tongue cancer, could it be hereditary to me and my sisters?

Not likely: If your parents and siblings are not affected, you are at no higher risk than the general population. Did you aunt use tobacco and/or alcohol? Both tobacco and alcohol and hpv infection are causative agents.

Probably not: Tonsil cancer doesn't tend to run in families though a propensity to react to certain viruses can, such as hpv. You probably would be a candidate for the hpv vaccine, and should ask your doctor if they recommend it for you. Otherwise avoid heavy drinking and smoking cigarettes, 2 known risk factors for tonsil/throat cancer.
