Addiction: Be truthful about your nature. Do you have an addictive personality ? If so, add adjuvant non- opioid analgesics to your remedy. Also, tell your pharmacist to fill only a fraction if your rx.

Avoid addiction: First discuss your concerns with your surgeon and your anesthesiologist. Second make your own conscientious effort to reduce the amount of narcotic pain medications that you take every day. Third, realize that there is some pain associated with the healing process. Don't let your mind convince you that you need narcotics for pain that you otherwise are able to tolerate.
