Depends: How broken? Major trauma, fall, fight etc other injuries? Age of patient likely an x-ray, some pain meds etc. Complications: pneumothorax, hemo thorax='blood in chest etc may require a tube or observation.

Broken rib: It depends on whether the rib is broken in just one place or multiple, and whether adjacent ribs are injured as well. The range of therapy is from anti inflammatory and pain medications to wrapping, to intercostal block for pain, and least likely, surgical intervention for stabilization.

Rib fractures : ER: Diagnosis Pain treatment Referral for a specialist. Simple rib fractures are treated conservatively with pain management only. Certain rib fractures that result in breathing difficulties and / or relentless pain are treated surgically. I use titanium plates to repair the chest wall.
