Blood and protein: Your urine analysis findings of blood and protein could be caused by a glomerulonephritis (g). Ssee a nephrologist (n) to collect our urine for 24 hours to see how much proteinuria (p) you have as well as having blood taken to see if you have a cause for it. If you have > 1 gram of p/day, you may need a kidney biopsy to get a diagnosis and a prognosis. See a n for an answer to your query.

Proteinuria can also be quantified on spot urine sample.

If people excrete 3 grams of protein/day in their urine, that does not mean they excrete 1 gram of protein in their urine/8 hours. A dip stick test is only a qualitative test, not a quantitive one. To get an accurately assess the amont of proteinuria, a 24 hour urine collection is the only way to know the amount of proteinuria a patient has.
