A member asked:

I had a "cold" tumor on my thyroid some years ago and they removed half my thyroid. at the time the doctor told me i would be on thyroid for the rest?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe: If you have had a hemithyroidectomy (i.e. Half of your thyroid removed), the remaining thyroid tissue may produce sufficient thyroid hormone to meet your body's needs. However, in some instances (particularly if there are underlying thyroid function problems), you may require ongoing thyroid hormone supplementation for life. Lab (blood) tests will make it clear which category you are in.
