Controversial: Valium is a benzodiazepine, and potential harm to babies with first trimester exposures has been debated for many years. Recent studies show an incidence of about .7% of cleft lip or palate in such babies, when compared to normal population. So the risk of this kind of harm is < 1%, but still present. http://tinyurl.com/9mfnrxl hopefully the mom is working on her anxiety with more than valium.

Possibly: Diazepam is listed as a category d drug by the fda due to demonstrated risks for the baby. Neonatal withdrawal syndrome, low activity level, low body temperature and poor feeding are commonly seen. There is some chance of fetal malformation suggested.Smaller doses given episodically and tapering off near the time of delivery may avoid the listed problems.
