Two better than one?: The duo test looks for the p24 antigen or protein made by the HIV virus. The elisa tests for the body's immune response to the infection (antihiv antibodies). Elisa is now very sensitive & specific (>99%/>99%) but can take 3-6 weeks to become (+). The p24 antigen may be positive faster (in studies 1-2 days on average being (+) @28d ) & may be more sensitive in diagnosing very early infection.
