Doctor can evaluate: "life-threatening" can mean different things to different patients, but waking up "not breathing" and feeling like "dying at night with asthma" would definitely be severe symptoms needing a doctors attention at this time. A regular doctor who can follow one's progress on medications can be very helpful. If a regular doctor is not available, the er is the place to go.
