Complicated : What other symptoms? Is the person, taking in fluids? Severe depression can cause slowed thoughts and decreased speech. However, if the person is becoming catatonic in other words totally dysfunctional this can be very serious. The situation needs evaluated asap. Severe depression if not responding to outpatient care my require hospitalization. Ect is effective and safe despite hollywood bias.
